Back to an Old Favorite

Sorry for not being good about posting regularly! I'm working on some Christmas presents already so I can't post pictures of those! Spoilers sweetie!

But I do want to share a project I finished yesterday.
Awhile back I saw this cute DIY for a cell phone case off of pinterest, but couldn't find the blog it was linked to (hate when this happens!)

Source: flickr.com via velma on Pinterest

Can you tell why I wanted to do this?
Geekiness and craftiness!
YES
I finally found the link on Wee Little Stitches and got ready to go!
Now Wee Little Stitches has an Etsy shop with SO MANY AWESOME geeky cross stitch patterns that I had a hard time choosing which one I wanted to put on my phone.
I finally decided on FIREFLY
I haven't cross stitched in forever! I learned how from my mom - a very talented cross stitcher.
I forgot how fun it is to get all the colors and follow the pattern.
I decided to have Jayne and Kaylee on my phone
And here it is all finished!!
I am so excited!
Now I have to stitch all of my browncoats on one piece :)
What do you think?  Do you like to cross stitch? I'd love to see what you have done or are working on.

I entered a contest...

In March I saw that the Austin Browncoats were having a contest to celebrate 10 years after Firefly began.
In case you didn't know, I think Firefly is the BEST show ever!
I even learned to knit so I could make a Jayne Hat!  I made my first attempt about a month after learning to knit, I was that determined!

There was an art portion of this contest so I decided to enter my Serenity Embroidery Hoop
When I made this hoop, I pictured Kaylee and Inara sitting by each other and making this together.  They both have different reasons for loving their Serenity and want to remember her in their own way.

Well, I got 1st place!! YEAH! I'm so honored to have won this contest! I get some cool Firefly related items that I can't wait to get!

I've got some more Firefly inspired ideas for future Geeky Hoops to get started on soon!!!

PS I didn't get a chance to put together my week in pictures yesterday.  I looked at my pictures and realized that I didn't have a lot from last week anyways! I'll make up for it next week!!

There's Nothing We Can't Face

I just finished another geeky hoop!!!
In case you don't live in this same geeky bubble that I live in, this is a reference to the ever AWESOME Buffy Musical Episode - Once More With Feeling.

Seriously, check out this episode!
I'll be adding those hoop to my Etsy shop soon!!!
Let me know what you think!
Any other geeky area that needs to be captured on an embroidery hoop?

Geeky Hoops - BSG

I added a new Geeky Hoop to my collection!!

I love the play on words!!
This is a reference to Battle Star Galatica.
Some of the characters would call the Cylons (aka robot evil) toasters and would express their hate with the phrase "frakkin toasters."

My Geeky Hoops have been pretty popular in my etsy shop and have already sold 2 of my TARDIS!
Are there other geeky references you want me to capture?
I'm still working on the perfect Buffy one! So many things to choose from!!

Geeky Hoops

I feel like I have crafty-ADD where I can't stay with one project or type of craft for too long! I am in the middle of a big granny square blanket, so I wanted to have something else to work on for moments with the crafty-ADD kicks in!  I have tried some embroidery before and have enjoyed doing it.  I thought I could combine some of my geekiness into an embroidery hoop and here are the results so far:

I started with my biggest geeky addiction - Firefly!

My newest geek love - Doctor Who

And my other geeky Dr - Dr Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory

These geeky hoops have been fun to make!  I've had some challenges - like not getting the tracing paper to work or having the tracing pen ink not come out! I used a tutorial I saw my friend Marci post on pinterest for finishing a hoop by gathering the fabric in the back.  This method looks much better than previous methods I've tried - I wish I had taken pictures to prove it!

These Geeky Hoops are added to my Etsy Shop! I'll be making more as I go along and geeky ideas come to me.

Valentines for the Hubby = Boba Fett

Before Christmas my husband came across a picture of a crocheted Boba Fett Helmet and he asked me if I could make that for him.
WHAT??
It seemed a little overwhelming at first but then I found some great pictures and thought I could tackle it!
I decided that this would make a great Valentine's present for him.

I didn't have it completely done on Valentines because I kept trying to make it work the way I wanted it to.  I think it turned out awesome!! Now we need it to get a little colder so the hubs can enjoy it more!!

Etsy Shop Updates

I had opened up my Etsy shop over a year ago and had some success with it.  I found that after awhile that I didn't have time for it like I thought and also wasn't selling items...  I learned some things from the process, so I'm not counting it as a total loss!

I decided about a month ago to reopen it with some new items and with some updates.  I have changed my shop to Made by Velma (notice that the blog reflects the changes too!).  I thought this was a little more fitting with what I am doing as some items I make aren't always geeky.

So here are two of the things I just added to my shop!!

I have custom made bear hats for kids!  These hats have become really popular with my friends and family that I decided that they needed to be shared with everyone!!!

SO I'm still going to have a few geek things too!! Here is the cutest crocheted Yoda EVER!!  I'm so excited that I can share this Yoda in my shop!!

I've got some other ideas and will add them as soon as I can! Take a look at my shop and let me know what you think! I would appreciate any feedback that you can give me!!

Spreading some Geekyness for Christmas -- Crocheted Yoda

One of my nieces made a request for a crocheted Yoda for Christmas.

I think he turned out SUPER cute!!!!

I used Lucyravenscar's pattern from Etsy and it was super easy to follow.  She has lots of other cute patterns so I would check her out!!!
I was able to make him in one evening! My husband thought he needed a lightsaber and I just kept forgetting to add it! Maybe I'll get it to him later ;)

I loved that I could make something geeky for Christmas and to see the smile on my niece's face was just priceless!

Bearded lady and kids!

So I go to probably one of the weirdest churches in Austin (The Well) and this past Sunday was Epic Beard Day!  Well, it was epic beard day because we were talking about Albus Dumbledore from Harry Potter.  Yep, we are totally talking about HP in church for the next few weeks.

I of course had to get into the whole Epic Beard Day and made these three lovely beards for myself and my children.
I used this pattern to help me get started but I improvised on the mustache and made each beard a little different.  I was totally inspired by I made you a beard for my special beard.

It was fun seeing everyone's creations and being a little different!

I'm gonna huuuuug you!

My son has been asking me for awhile to make him something and we've gone back and forth on what he wanted.  He has made all kinds of suggestions but nothing has sounded exactly right.

When I came across the very awesome Sackboy version by Caustic Musings of Gir  from the show Invader Zim, my son was set on me making him one.  I wasn't sure I was ready for this level of crocheting but felt eventually I would get there.

Well, after making some of these pumpkins, I felt I had a better idea on how to make him.

I personally loved this picture of Gir and it was the inspiration!

He is just SOOOO cute!!!
I went back and forth on the eyes and if I wanted the "traditional" buggy eyes, but I think he looks much cuter this way! I can't wait for my son to see him!
I just need to sew on a zipper and he is finished!!!

Eventually I would love to make a version like this

And now we will end with the Doom Song!! Hope you enjoyed!!!

Friday I'm In Love - Joss Whedon

I am super excited about my plans for this weekend! My geek heart is over flowing because I get to see Serenity tomorrow at the Alamo for Can't Stop the Serenity.  I've seen Serenity in the theater 5 times and now going on 6! I really love being apart of this event as it is a fund raiser for Equality Now but also just for the pure geekiness of it all!!

So this Friday I will say I am in love with all things Joss Whedon

cause really, there is more to my love than just Firefly!
There is of course Buffy -- Just finished season 7 not too long ago and now working through the comics!
(I picked this picture for Buffy because it has my favorite - OZ! and Drucilla! Too bad it didn't have Anya in the picture...)

Then there was Dr. Horrible... Pure awesomenss!!!
I enjoyed Dollhouse -- it got so much better as it went on.
Now I'm finally working my way through Angel.  I really really love Lorne!!

What are your favorite Joss Shows?

Embroidered Serenity

I am a huge geek and I am probably the most geeky when it comes to Firefly, one Joss Whedon's greatest TV shows!  I am not sure how many times I've re-watched the series but I know I have seen the movie in a theater 5 times (more about this later in the week!)

I also love my coffee.  My day always seems much better after a good cup or two or four.

I needed to figure out how to combine these two things together - so why not make a Firefly themed coffee sleeve??

I wanted to include one of my favorite quotes from the movie (Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down) and had to have the ship Serenity on it.

So first I drew my own picture of Serenity to use.
I was pretty impressed with my drawing skills on this! I also transported it over to paint to make the lines darker so it would be easier to transfer to fabric.

So then I got started on the embroidery! This was my first time to try it so its not perfect by any means, but I really love the way it turned out!
Next I sewed it all up to make it into a coffee sleeve and added some velcro and TADA! A Firefly Coffee Sleeve!!
I know it isn't perfect but I'm pretty excited with it! I have ideas on how to improve on it so I can hopefully add it into my Etsy shop when I'm ready to open!

If you have any embroidery tips you would like to pass on, please share them!

On a Mario Kick

I might be going overboard on the Mario stuff, but they are so fun and cute to make!

I found this web page  that had great instructions with pictures for carrying multiple colors aka Fair Isle.  It made knitting a pattern with multiple colors easier and it looks cleaner. Plus the edges of the design weren't pulling where I had been changing the colors out!  I didn't take into account that when using 4 colors it would add more bulk plus I was a little too tight in my technique so the hat kind of pulls in the middle! OPPS!  SO while I had intended for this to be given to one of my adult friends, I think I will give it to one of my 4 or 5 year old friends =)

Its still super cute though!
My flash washed out some of the color but you get the idea!

Crochet, not so bad!

Here is an update picture of the blanket for my son.  Its about 3 feet across.  I made a big mistake last night and added another corner to it so for a short while it had 5 corners.  So I guess I was aiming for a pentagon at that point!  Oh well, yarn comes apart easily so I was able to get back to where I had added the extra corner and took it out.

I've got plans to make a blanket for my daughter and make heart squares like this and use lots of bright colors

When I get this whole crochet thing down I would love to make these awesome creations!

My daughter thinks she needs the unicorn and my son needs the dinosaur
(Thanks AJ for the cute finds!)

Do the Mario

I had a request for a Mario inspired armband from one of my friends and I had to do it!

She thought it was pretty awesome

and loved it right away!
