Friday I'm in Love - New Beginnings

Today is my last day at my current job.  I'll be hanging up my headset from the non-profit I've been with for the last three years and starting my new career on Monday as an official Social Worker.  It is a new chapter for me and feels like everything is really starting over. A new beginning to the next chapter in my life I guess!
When I was thinking of this blog post I was reminding of a quote from J.R.R. Tolkien's Fellowship of the Ring
" 'It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door,' he used to say. 'You step into the Road, and if you don't keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to.'"

There is a sense of adventure for me.  I am super excited about this new job I'll be starting on Monday!

I think this picture sums it up just nice!

I wanted to end with this song.  It always comes to mind when I think about starting something new or going on a new journey in my life.  I know I have come a long way personally and how each day I feel more and more OK with who I am.  Enjoy the song, Joshua Radin is amazing!

all pictures from we heart it

Also -- you may have noticed that today is the 99th post for Geek Inspired! Come back tomorrow for the 100th post and little surprise!!

Pumpkins Everywhere!!!

I have finished up some more pumpkins for the CAL and thought I'd show them off!

They are so easy to make that I find myself just making another one just for fun!
I love looking at the Fllickr album of the other pumpkins! Check them out for some other really great ones!!

I also wanted to show off the Jayne Hat I embroidered for my next coffee sleeve.  I'm still thinking of the perfect quote to go with it. I've gotten some great suggestions from my friend Marci, but would still love more suggestions!  Let me know if you have an idea for a quote to go with it!

Friday I'm in Love - Stars

It has been a LONG Friday for me!!

This morning I saw a blog post that had a picture of a star and instantly brightened my day! I love love stars!
I hope these stars will bring you some love on Friday!

These necklaces are super cute!

Cutie cute rainbow stars!

I love getting to look at stars in the night sky

I want to get another tattoo and plan to get one with stars in it.  My little sister has star tattoos and they look awesome. I think it would be cool if we had similar tattoos!  Its going to be awhile before I get one though - need extra money first!  I love this star tattoo!

So lets end this little blog post with a great song about stars!
I of course picked this version because it has Bono! Many of you know I am so in love with him!!

Growing in the Garden

Look what I found in the garden this morning!

I imagine this is what Cinderella's pumpkin looked like after it was done being a carriage.  Once you are hit with magic, you are never the same!!

I'm gonna huuuuug you!

My son has been asking me for awhile to make him something and we've gone back and forth on what he wanted.  He has made all kinds of suggestions but nothing has sounded exactly right.

When I came across the very awesome Sackboy version by Caustic Musings of Gir  from the show Invader Zim, my son was set on me making him one.  I wasn't sure I was ready for this level of crocheting but felt eventually I would get there.

Well, after making some of these pumpkins, I felt I had a better idea on how to make him.

I personally loved this picture of Gir and it was the inspiration!

He is just SOOOO cute!!!
I went back and forth on the eyes and if I wanted the "traditional" buggy eyes, but I think he looks much cuter this way! I can't wait for my son to see him!
I just need to sew on a zipper and he is finished!!!

Eventually I would love to make a version like this

And now we will end with the Doom Song!! Hope you enjoyed!!!

Friday I'm In Love - Joss Whedon

I am super excited about my plans for this weekend! My geek heart is over flowing because I get to see Serenity tomorrow at the Alamo for Can't Stop the Serenity.  I've seen Serenity in the theater 5 times and now going on 6! I really love being apart of this event as it is a fund raiser for Equality Now but also just for the pure geekiness of it all!!

So this Friday I will say I am in love with all things Joss Whedon

cause really, there is more to my love than just Firefly!
There is of course Buffy -- Just finished season 7 not too long ago and now working through the comics!
(I picked this picture for Buffy because it has my favorite - OZ! and Drucilla! Too bad it didn't have Anya in the picture...)

Then there was Dr. Horrible... Pure awesomenss!!!
I enjoyed Dollhouse -- it got so much better as it went on.
Now I'm finally working my way through Angel.  I really really love Lorne!!

What are your favorite Joss Shows?

Getting Started

I got started on my pumpkins!

I first started with some left over orange yarn I had and realized soon I wouldn't have enough for the pattern.  I made adjustments and made it into a smaller pumpkin!

I also adjusted the leaves and made 3 instead of the 5 in the pattern and made one longer than the others.  I think it adds some character!

I then got some awesome "I love this yarn" yarn called burnt pumpkin and made the pumpkin in the pattern.
These are so easy and quick to make!  I really needed more polly fill so the pumpkin isn't as full as it should be, but it still looks cute!

I really love the curly stem!

There is still time to join in!!

Embroidered Serenity

I am a huge geek and I am probably the most geeky when it comes to Firefly, one Joss Whedon's greatest TV shows!  I am not sure how many times I've re-watched the series but I know I have seen the movie in a theater 5 times (more about this later in the week!)

I also love my coffee.  My day always seems much better after a good cup or two or four.

I needed to figure out how to combine these two things together - so why not make a Firefly themed coffee sleeve??

I wanted to include one of my favorite quotes from the movie (Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down) and had to have the ship Serenity on it.

So first I drew my own picture of Serenity to use.
I was pretty impressed with my drawing skills on this! I also transported it over to paint to make the lines darker so it would be easier to transfer to fabric.

So then I got started on the embroidery! This was my first time to try it so its not perfect by any means, but I really love the way it turned out!
Next I sewed it all up to make it into a coffee sleeve and added some velcro and TADA! A Firefly Coffee Sleeve!!
I know it isn't perfect but I'm pretty excited with it! I have ideas on how to improve on it so I can hopefully add it into my Etsy shop when I'm ready to open!

If you have any embroidery tips you would like to pass on, please share them!

Squirrely Bookmark

My son needed a new bookmark for his nightly reading.  We normally just grab a piece of paper and use it when we can't find a "real" bookmark.  I wanted to make him a special bookmark to help him feel excited about reading.
I had saved a cardboard tag from Old Navy and thought this might be the right time to use it.

I cut the squirrel out and just attached a simple crocheted tail.
Easy peasy!
